Influence of Adding Method of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose on the Properties of Latex

So far, there is no report on the effect of the addition method of hydroxyethyl cellulose on the latex paint system. Through research, it is found that the addition of hydroxyethyl cellulose in the latex paint system is different, and the performance of the prepared latex paint is very different. In the case of the same addition, the addition method is different, and the viscosity of the prepared latex paint is different. In addition, the addition method of hydroxyethyl cellulose also has a very obvious impact on the storage stability of latex paint.

The way of adding hydroxyethyl cellulose in latex paint determines its dispersion state in the paint, and the state of dispersion is one of the keys to its thickening effect. Through the research, it is found that the hydroxyethyl cellulose added in the dispersion stage is arranged in an orderly manner under the action of high shear, and it is easy to slide each other, and the overlapping and intertwined spatial network structure is destroyed, thereby reducing the thickening efficiency. The paste HEC added in the let-down stage has a very small damage to the space network structure during the low-speed stirring process, and its thickening effect is fully reflected, and this network structure is also very beneficial to ensure the storage stability of the latex paint. In summary, the addition of hydroxyethyl cellulose HEC in the let-down stage of latex paint is more conducive to its high thickening efficiency and high storage stability.

Cellulosic thickeners have always been one of the most important rheological additives for latex paints, among which hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) is the most widely used. According to many literature reports, cellulose thickeners have the following advantages: high thickening efficiency, good compatibility, high storage stability, excellent sag resistance, and the like. The addition method of hydroxyethyl cellulose in the production of latex paint is flexible, and the more common addition methods are as follows:

01. Add it during pulping to increase the viscosity of the slurry, thus helping to improve the dispersion efficiency;

02. Prepare a viscous paste and add it when mixing the paint to achieve the purpose of thickening.
