How to use and precautions for hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) is a non-toxic, odorless, non-irritating white powder or granular substance, which is widely used in medicine, food, cosmetics and building materials.

1. How to use hydroxypropyl methylcellulose

Dissolution method

HPMC has good solubility in cold water and can form a transparent or milky colloidal solution. The specific dissolution steps are as follows:

Cold water dissolution method: Slowly sprinkle HPMC into the stirring cold water, avoid adding hot water directly to prevent agglomeration.

Hot water dissolution method: Mix AnxinCel®HPMC with a part of hot water and stir until it expands, then add cold water to the target volume, and continue stirring until it is completely dissolved.

Dosage control

The dosage of HPMC depends on the specific application:

Pharmaceutical industry: As a coating agent or sustained-release material for tablets, the commonly used concentration is 1% to 5%.

Food industry: Used as a thickener or stabilizer, the addition amount is usually 0.1% to 0.5%.

Construction field: used as a water retainer and thickener in mortar and putty powder, with a recommended addition amount of 0.3% to 1%.

Application form

HPMC can be added to different products in the form of powder or solution. Usually, its compatibility with other ingredients must be ensured during formula design.

2. Precautions for Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose

Dissolution temperature control
HPMC is sensitive to water temperature. It is recommended to keep the water temperature below 60°C during dissolution. If rapid dissolution is required, it is advisable to use cold water to disperse it first, and then add hot water to activate its viscosity.

Avoid agglomeration
When adding HPMC, sprinkle it slowly and evenly into the water and stir continuously. Avoid pouring too much at one time, otherwise it may cause lumps that are difficult to disperse.

Storage conditions
HPMC should be stored in a dry and cool environment, away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent it from absorbing moisture and agglomerating, affecting the use effect.

Compatibility test
Before using AnxinCel®HPMC in the formula, compatibility tests should be carried out with other raw materials to ensure that no chemical reaction occurs or affects the performance of the final product.

Use environment
In construction applications, HPMC is sensitive to the temperature and humidity of the construction environment. Its water retention performance is particularly important under high temperature or dry conditions. It is recommended to properly maintain after construction to ensure the best effect.

Avoid mixing with strong acids and alkalis

AnxinCel®HPMC may degrade or its performance may decrease in strong acid or alkali environments, so special attention should be paid to pH control when designing the formula.

Safety and environmental protection

HPMC is a non-toxic and harmless material, but dust inhalation should be avoided during processing or use, and it is recommended to wear a protective mask. When disposing of waste, local environmental protection regulations should be observed.

Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose plays an important role in various fields with its excellent water retention, thickening and film-forming properties. Correct use methods and precautions can not only improve its application effect, but also ensure the safety and environmental protection of the use process. In actual operation, users should flexibly adjust the formula according to specific needs and strictly follow the specifications to give full play to its advantages.
